As far as we can tell, Cummins Engine Company currently manufacturers diesel engines in the range of 18HP (0.9litre A series) to 3500HP (78 litre QSK series) with scores and perhaps hundreds of models and variants in between. In amongst that broad spectrum is also a QSV91 - 18 cylinder (91 litre) monster engine in the Cummins stable - but it runs on gas and seems to be limited to about 2500HP. Ongoing product development by Cummins makes a definitive product range statement difficult to make at any time.
The Cummins engine products serve almost every market that requires diesel or gas power on the planet and although you may not (in fact you WILL NOT) see a Cummins branded vehicle you can be assured that a very significant portion of industry is powered by engines produced by this world class manufacturer.
Just what portion depends upon how you segment that particular market (OEM's typically quote numbers developed by clever marketing departments rather than independent statisticians). But however you read those figures, the fact is that Cummins is one of the world's great engine designers and manufacturers and its market share is always at or near the very top of the diesel engine tree.
You may never see an A Series nor a QSV but if you are involved in the industrial, mining, power generation, agricultural, marine or other such industries you will certainly come across Cummins powered equipment.
In Australia in the On-Highway (trucking) market, for example, we currently see B Series (5.9litre); C Series (8.3litre); L Series (8.8 litre); M series (11 litre), N series (14 litre); S series (15 litre) and on occasion, K series (19 litre) engines. These generally cover the range of 120HP to 760HP. More recent additions are 4.5 and 6.7 litre mid-range engines. Others, including ISF and ISZ are said to be either in development or otherwise on the way.
Older generation Cummins On-Highway engines which are found in ever decreasing numbers today include V470 (7.6 litre V8), V-504 (8.2 litre V8); V-555 (9 litre V8) and V-903 (14.8 litre V8) covering the range from 185 to 350HP.
The Marine market covers an even broader range which starts with Cummins Onan branded generator sets and ends with K50-V16 work boat engines or larger.
Heavy Mining applications generally involve mostly N, S and K products.
Much lighter earthmoving equipment offers B and C series engine family products with some branded by the equipment manufacturers as their own. Case and Komatsu construction equipment offer an examples.
Agricultural sector typically uses C, N, S and K products.
Power Generation also covers a very broad range - possibly, the broadest of all.
If you would like a specific spec sheet or power curve for your individual Cummins engine you might like to check the manufacturer's website or alternatively contact our office here and we'll see if we can help you.
For those of you who can't handle the mix of North American and metric measurements (mixtures are common in this industry), the approximate power and capacity conversion factors follow:
1HP = 0.745 kW 1 litre = 61.02 cubic inches
